The 2026 Membership Performance Benchmark Report was recently released, and it offers valuable insights into the technology investments shaping the future of membership organizations. This 11th annual report provides a comprehensive overview of membership trends, including the top tools and platforms for 2026.

Associations, unions, and non-profits plan to adopt these technologies to boost engagement, streamline operations, and deliver exceptional member experiences.

Let’s explore the key takeaways and what they mean for your organization’s tech stack.

Top Membership Tech Investments for 2026

Data from the 2026 Membership Performance Benchmark Report. Percentages represent how many respondents indicated investment in that particular technology.

1. Membership Management Software (71% of respondents)

71% of survey respondents indicated they already have or will be investing in membership management software/CRM platforms in 2026.

It’s no surprise that this continues to top the list. These systems are the backbone of modern membership organizations. A strong platform streamlines data management, automates workflows, and enhances the overall member experience.

2. Events/Conference Technology (42% of respondents)

Coming in at #2, 42% of respondents have or plan to invest in events/conference technology this year. Events, including conferences and annual meetings, are a tried-and-true way to increase member engagement.

3. Learning Management Systems (36% of respondents)

Learning Management Systems play a pivotal role in professional development and continuing education. Offering certifications, on-demand courses, and interactive learning opportunities, they help organizations deliver value to their members while fostering skill development.

4. Community/mobile engagement software (35% of respondents)

You're constantly competing for your members’ attention and need to find the best, most efficient ways to break through the noise. Members are more likely to respond to content that resonates with their professional and/or personal interests, leading to increased app usage and participation in your association’s activities. Personalized content delivered through a community platform or mobile app demonstrates you understand their needs, and it fosters a sense of deep connection they can’t get elsewhere.

Additional Technology Investments

While membership management, events software, LMS platforms, and community software took the spotlight, other tools are also making waves. These include:

  • ⚙️ Marketing automation (35% of respondents). This technology allows you to send personalized member communications at scale.
  • 📊 Data/analytics platforms (32% of respondents). This year's report found that organizations that can easily access and understand their data are more likely to increase their member acquisition and engagement (page 18).
  • 🤖 Artificial Intelligence (29% of respondents). AI can personalize the member experience and optimize your operations. Interestingly, this statistic dropped slightly from last year's 34%.
  • 🏆 Awards or grants management (26% of respondents). This statistic more than doubled from 12% last year. Learn more with the Ultimate Guide to Awards Management and the Ultimate Guide to Abstract Management by OpenWater.
  • 💼 Job boards/career center (24% of respondents). Career resources can play a key role in your member value proposition. Many members join to advance their career, so make sure you're offering benefits that help achieve this goal.
  • 📢 Advertising and sponsorship (21% of respondents). This technology streamlines ad placement, campaign tracking, and sponsorship. This is up from 15% in 2025 but is still fairly low considering advertising and sponsorships are this year's top source of revenue outside of membership fees (page 7).
